ROBINSON / (star) EXTRA RICH (star) " dm, inner solid ring, ca 1840's to 1850's (RobinsonRW04) Button depicts infantry horn, 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia "MVM". This was an old elite unit formed in 1854...This unit was reorganized into the 42nd Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War and saw distinguished service. Reference: Albert MS41, Tice MS214A1.

School was formed in 1855, well known military school of the period, located Worchester Massachusetts. Three part officer style button was utilized which is unusual for military schools. It is not entirely clear who this was for as the first Mobile, Alabama, regiment was not formed before the war. There is the possibility that this is Mississippi Volunteer Corps. It is not determined yet what school this is. Button style is very similar to other cadet buttons from Massachusetts and bears the arm and saber, and so is tentatively attributed to a school from Massachusetts. Button depicts "B S" script style. Bingham School, Mebaneville, North Carolina was a preparatory school near UNC. Most buttons from this school have been found in the 1865 North Carolina campaign, and generally not far from the school. The school was reopened after the war and there appear to be post war versions of this button from that period, with late backmarks and an updated style, but this is not at all like those buttons. The school operated at various locations in North Carolina from 1814 to 1891. Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO / (star) WATERBURY (star) " dm between rings of dots, 1860 to 1865 manufacture, (Scovill.820). This unit became the Pennsylvania Reserve Brigade and served with distinction. This is a prewar button for this unit before the war. The use of the name "National Guard" spread to the other states after the Civil War.Reference: Albert PA39, Tice PA223A2.

B4403...South Carolina regimental button, state seal with palmetto tree with snake and "SC", Palmetto Guard, English import, "(graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALY. (sic)", (21.3mm). Button depicts the seal of South Carolina, a palmetto tree over an oak log, symbolic of the Revolutionary War victory at Sullivans Island. The usual seal design has been modified by adding a snake and replacing the letters "SC", South Carolina, with "CS" for Confederate States, a defiant statement. Association specifically with the Palmetto Guard is not absolutely proven, however even if not this unit, it would have been intended for a well financed South Carolina unit after secession and during the war and was brought in through the blockade. Backmark: "(graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALY. (sic)", likely Smith Kemp Wright 1862 to 1865, (Extra.601.Coat). Two part high convex button, coat size. B4464...North Carolina school button, Bingham School, Mebaneville,"SCOVILL MF'G CO / (star) WATERBURY (star) " dm between rings of dots, (22.5mm). Button depicts "B S" script style. Bingham School, Mebaneville, North Carolina was a preparatory school near UNC. Most buttons from this school have been found in the 1865 North Carolina campaign, and generally not far from the school. The school was reopened after the war and there appear to be post war versions of this button from that period, with late backmarks and an updated style, but this is not at all like those buttons. The school operated at various locations in North Carolina from 1814 to 1891. Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO / (star) WATERBURY (star) " dm between rings of dots, 1860 to 1865 manufacture, (Scovill.820). Two part convex button, cadet coat size. Reference: Albert not listed, Tice , not listed.
