B2770...Virginia school, Rumsfield Military Institute "RMA" cadet staff officer button, (tentative identification) (22.3mm). Backmark: "SCOVILL MG CO / Wasterbury" small dm crowding the rim This button, along with several others, was found in a burial site at Cold Harbor Battlefield. The SONS of Confederate Veterans supervised the re-interrment of the remains in a highly publicized event. The jacket with these buttons was draped over the YOUNG cadet's head in a shallow grave. Button was misidentified in Albert as a post war button, and also by Tice as a D EVANS transitional button. Tice notes that the only examples known are the buttons from this grave. The backmark is an 1850's backmark. (backmark is Tice pg. 33, item 14) Identification of the school is tentatively attributed to Rumsfield Military Institute, a small military school that was located in RICHMOND, Va but closed on the eve of the Civil War. It is definitely not Randolph Macon Academy (founded 1892). It could also be RICHMOND Male Academy, but that explanation has problems because that was a school for troubled boys and was not thought to have had a military orientation. It is also highly unusual for a "staff" button to be used by cadets. Probably part of the explanation of the rarity is these may have only been made for the "officers" of the cadet corps. Stand up shank intact, some gilding, button shows ground action. Recovered: Belulah Church, Cold Harbor, Va Reference: Albert SU338, Tice VAS288B1 in error...
