These buttons are very similar to the standard Federal buttons. However the wings are in the relaxed or 'drooped" position. This two part button could have been intended for enlisted soldiers. Button depicts state seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, manufactured before the war for officers of North Carolina units. Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO. / WATERBURY." dm between two rings of dots, no dividers, used on staff buttons ca 1860s, (Scovill.800.Coat). Three part officer staff button, coat size. B4288... North Carolina school button, Bingham School, Mebaneville,"SCOVILL MF'G CO / (star) WATERBURY (star) " dm between rings of dots, (22.5mm).
Button depicts "B S" script style. Bingham School, Mebaneville, North Carolina was a preparatory school near UNC. Most buttons from this school have been found in the 1865 North Carolina campaign, and generally not far from the school. The school was reopened after the war and there appear to be post war versions of this button from that period, with late backmarks and an updated style, but this is not at all like those buttons. The school operated at various locations in North Carolina from 1814 to 1891. Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO / (star) WATERBURY (star) " dm between rings of dots, 1860 to 1865 manufacture, (Scovill.820). Two part convex button, cadet coat size. Reference: Albert not listed, Tice not listed.

B4403... South Carolina regimental button, state seal with palmetto tree with snake and "SC", Palmetto Guard, English import, "(graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALY. (sic)", (21.3mm). Button depicts the seal of South Carolina, a palmetto tree over an oak log, symbolic of the Revolutionary War victory at Sullivans Island. The usual seal design has been modified by adding a snake and replacing the letters "SC", South Carolina, with "CS" for Confederate States, a defiant statement. Association specifically with the Palmetto Guard is not absolutely proven, however even if not this unit, it would have been intended for a well financed South Carolina unit after secession and during the war and was brought in through the blockade. Backmark: "(graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALY. (sic)", likely Smith Kemp Wright 1862 to 1865, (Extra.601.Coat). Two part high convex button, coat size. Button depicts the seal of Virginia, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended for troops of Virginia. Backmark: "SCOVILLS / WATERBURY CO / EXTRA RICH" Scovill had early production problems with this button, eventually struck a thin silvered skin fitted over the previously manufactured one part button of the same design. Button depicts "ACC" in a wreath, believed to have been intended for University of Alabama Cadet Corps. This pattern may have also been produced by Scovill for other purposes including Albany Citizens Corps, most backmarks associated with this face are late, this one is 1850's. Backmark: "SCOVILL. MG. Button depicts the seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, intended for troops of North Carolina, southern wartime manufacture. This pattern was die struck, workmanship was very crude, small variations may be noted in manufacturing quality or die details as more than one die was likely used. Button depicts simple block "I" on plain field with border, intended for Confederate infantry troops, southern wartime manufacture, a southern wartime manufacture. The size and dimensions of the "I" can vary considerably suggesting that multiple manufacturers may have been employed.
