Button was intended for infantry and depicts eagle with "I" in the shield, generally for officers. Backmark: "NEW. ORLEANS / J. DELARUE" rm script lettering, between two solid rings, a New Orleans jeweler 1811 to 1824, (DelarueJohn100).

B7779... Confederate officer button, eagle facing right with upright wings, CS in shield, one piece low convex, Confederate wartime manufacture, (24.3mm)
Button depicts eagle with wings in upright position, intended for Confederate officers, southern wartime manufacture, a "local". This die pattern features eagle facing right with 13 stars, "CS" in the shield, on a one piece convex design, was a likely copied from an 1830's patriotic design on a flat button, the die was poorly executed, and seldom is the detail sharp. Backmark: blank brass back, high convex one piece stamped button, weak impression of die face will appear on back, applied shank was spot brazed or soldered and will be weak or missing, (BlankSouthern220). One part convex button without back, coat size, applied shank, crude manufacture. Reference: Albert CS17, Tice CS233A1.

Button depicts the seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, intended for troops of North Carolina, southern wartime manufacture.This pattern was die struck, workmanship was very crude, small variations may be noted in manufacturing quality or die details as more than one die was likely used. Backmark: "S. A. MYERS / RICHMOND VA." rmdc, wartime manufacture attributed to S. A Myers, Richmond, Virginia, (Myers.100). B0759... Confederate enlisted button, eagle facing right with relaxed wings lined field with 13 stars, southern wartime manufacture, blank with channel, (15.4mm). Plain back, button was made by C Rouyer, this was intended for a small size button for an enlisted jacket, not an officer sleeve button. No large sizes were made with this motif. There is coat in The Museum of the Confederacy identified to a private which bears this button down the front of the jacket . Button depicts 13 stars. It is a wartime button, but follows the 1840's style when small buttons were frequently used to fasten the jacket front. Reference: Albert CS25B Tice CS269As1.1.

Backmark: blank with a channel, possible product of Wildt & Klein., Columbia SC. Button was designed to appear to be a three part staff button, but the fat rim is integral to the design. Button depicts 13 stars with eagle on a lined field. Reference: Albert CS42, Tice CS290A1.

B0846... Maine button, state seal husbandman and seaman with white pine, officer, "E. HALFMAN (sic) /MONTGOMERY "dm, (14.7mm). Button depicts the state seal of Main, the north star with a husbandman and seaman standing beside a white pine, intended for officers of Maine militia units. Backmark: "E. HALFMAN (sic) /MONTGOMERY "dm. This is an example of a Scovill production error. Scovill had a contract to produce AVC buttons for Alabama subcontract under Halfmann, a Montgomery Alabama tailor. First they misspelled the name. Then they used the backs left over for these Maine buttons! The Maine militia probably did not send an inspector so they got away with it! B0855... Maine button, state seal husbandman and seaman with white pine, officer staff, "CANFIELD BROS.CO/ BAL", dm, (14.7mm). Button depicts the state seal of Main, the north star with a husbandman and seaman standing beside a white pine, intended for officers of Maine militia units. Backmark: "CANFIELD BROS.CO/ BAL", dm. Scovill mismatched back. Scovill had contracts for Maryland and Virginia buttons, subcontract under Canfield, apparently these backs were left over and Scovill used them for a contract with Maine. This is the pattern with the flat star above the state seal... Reference: Albert ME1, Tice ME200.

Scovill had contracts for Cuban buttons, subcontract under Palanzuelos Mendez, a Cuban military goods supplier, apparently these backs were left over and Scovill used them for a contract with Maine. Reference: Albert CT13, Tice CT205As5.

Backmark: blank depressed wide channel imperfectly formed, narrow area around shank with variance of dimension, star in the channel is often weak and may be obscured by corrosion, a worn die or debris during stamping, shank is drilled from sheet copper, likely made by Wildt, (BlankSouthern390). B1476... Massachusetts regimental button , Independent Cadet Corps "ICC" "D. EVANS & CO. / SUPERFINE" dm, (15mm). Backmark: "D. EVANS & CO. / SUPERFINE" dm inner ring of short hyphens (square dots) transitional use ca 1860 to post war. (Evans26As) Independence Cadet Corps was a cadet unit in Boston, button produced in this small "cadet" size only. During the Civil War, the unit was reorganized into the 45th Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Cadet Unit". Reference: Albert MS62, Tice MS248As3.

B2995... Pennsylvania or New York or Massachusetts regiment, "Chasseurs", (16.5mm). Backmark:"Cordier Freres / Paris" Uniforms were purchased in the "chasseurs" style from France for units for the 62nd and 83rd Pennsylvania, 18th Massachusetts, and 49th and 72nd New York Regiments. They all bore at least one of the variants of this cast white metal button. This button could have been used by any of these units. Reference: AlbertPA48, Tice PA235A1.
