Civil War weapons, Relicman sales catalog
All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment are real good things to apply.
All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.
W0830
Single shot smoothbore percussion carbine,
Jenks 1845, converted to rifled 1860's, .54 cal.
Called the "mule ear", this referred to side hammer and breech block lever
giving the appearance of ears. This actually was a clever early
breechloader, made for the Navy, initially designed as smoothbore, most were
converted to percussion in the 1860's. Manufactured by N P Ames,
Springfield, Massachusetts. Standard features include brass buttplate,
brass trigger guard, two brass bands, distinct "mule ears" hammer and breech
release, single strap ring on underside, rifled with six lands and grooves.
Marks on lockplate "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS" and to the rear, "Wm.
JENKS". Marks on the barrel breech " Wm. JENKS / USN / RP / P 1845 ".
Inspector cartouche in the wood on the left side is present but weak.
Metal patina is pleasing light brown, wood shows dings and scratches from use,
bore rifling is clean, mechanics fully functional, exceptional example of scarce
weapon. Barrel is 24.25 inches.
Ref: Flayderman 9B-061 (1845)
