Weapons of the Civil War
All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment are real good things to have
All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.
W0830
Jenks carbine, aka "Mule Ear" .54 cal.
Called the "mule ear" this referred to side hammer and breech block lever giving
the appearance of ears. This actually was a clever early
breechloader, made for the Navy. Manufactured by N P Ames,
Springfield Mass. Marks on lockplate "NP AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS" and to the
rear "W JENKS". On the barrel breech " W R
JENKS / USN / RP / P 1846 ". Inspector cartouche in the wood on the left side
is present but weak.
Breech loading percussion on the side, distinct "mule ears" hammer and breech
release, brass buttplate, brass trigger guard, two brass bands, riding
ring on
underside.
Mechanics fully functional, metal generally clean with pleasing patina, wood
shows dings and scratches from use, bore rifling is clean, exceptional example
of scarce weapon.
Barrel is 24.25 inches, 54 cal breechloader
