Weapons of the Civil War
All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment are real good things to have.
W0799 Spencer repeating
carbine, Model 1860, .52 cal
This weapon revolutionized the carbines, it was the first repeating
carbine to be significantly employed in the Civil War, first introduced by
Custer's cavalry at Gettysburg, then it tipped the balance in the 1864 campaign
in the Shenandoah Valley. It could load seven all weather or metallic rim fire
cartridges, which was a major advantage over the single shot paper cartridge
weapons previously employed. Mark on top of frame: "SPENCER REPEATING /
RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" Serial number
"52689". Seven shot breechloader rimfire, iron buttplate, single iron
barrel band, saddle bar and ring on left side, strap hook on bottom of butt,
spring loaded tube feeds through the buttplate, Spencer long range sight.
Metal appearance pleasing with light rust, long range sight intact, spring
loaded tube intact, bore is clean, rifling definite, wood solid with dings and
scratches from use, holes bored into the forestock where something was
apparently mounted at one time this is minor damage, initials "JP" are
strongly carved into the butt, riding ring and bar intact, sling hook intact,
mechanics fully functional, solid example.
Barrel length, 22 inches
