Weapons of the Civil War
All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment are real good things to have.
W0757 Spencer repeating rifle, Model 1860, .52 cal
This weapon revolutionized the carbines, it was the first repeating carbine to
be significantly employed in the Civil War, first introduced by Custer's cavalry
at Gettysburg, then it tipped the balance in the 1864 campaign in the Shenandoah
Valley. It could load seven all weather or metallic rim fire cartridges, which
was a major advantage over the single shot paper cartridge weapons previously
employed. The longer rifle was intended for "Riflemen" or
sharpshooters. Mark on top of frame: "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON
MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860"
Serial number "359" appears on the rear breech and underneath the
barrel, this is early number.
Weapon will display well, has been put together from parts. This is the long
rifle version of the Spencer, barrel is intact, the stock has been cut down, and
top of the butt reshaped, probably to make a long range shooter, holes behind
the breech are from installation of a long range rear sight now removed, riding
ring and bar removed, loading tube is present spring is missing, mechanics works
and will display Spencer features well, inexpensive example.
Barrel is 30 inches.
