Maynard Carbine, second model .50 cal

This is .50 caliber Maynard carbine, produced 1863 to 1865. The tape priming
system from the early model was replaced with this percussion system delivering
center fire through the base of a metal cartridge.
Frame right side is marked "MANUFACTURED BY / MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE
MASS", left side "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC 6,
1859"
Serial number appears on trigger guard strap underneath, "7705"
Two inspector cartouches on the wood near the riding bar, additional inspector
mark "AJN" on the barrel, "S" on the sight, and
"N" on the buttplate.
Single shot breechloader, percussion firing system, iron buttplate, no forestock
or bands, three leaf sight, saddle bar and ring on right side.
Metal appearance pleasing with light rust, sight intact, bore is clean, rifling
definite, wood solid with dings and scratches from use, saddle riding ring and
bar intact, mechanics fully functional. Soldier initials "CM" and
"LH" carved on the butt. Outstanding example.
