Weapons of the Civil War

All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use.  These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever!  Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment are real good things to have.

The Model 1861 was the primary musket at the start of the Civil War, often referred to as the "Springfield" musket. Manufactured under sub contract by William Muir & Co., Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
Lock is marked "1864" behind the hammer, eagle head / "US" and "Wm MUIR & CO / WINDSOR LOCKS CT" in front.
Barrel is marked "VP" over eagle head, date not readable.
Buttplate is marked "US".
Single shot .58 cal rifled muzzleloader, iron buttplate, "C" shaped hammer, bolster with clean out screw, three leaf sight, iron trigger guard, three barrel bands, two strap hooks, tulip head ramrod with bulge and threads.
Mechanics are functional but stiff, metal is moderately pitted, brown patina on lock, barrel has been buffed, three leaf sight is replacement, ramrod is replacement, bolster screw is replacement, fit around lock is poor, this weapon has probably been made from parts, both strap hooks missing, bore rifling is worn and dirty. Wood is dinged and scratched from honest use, chips missing around breech and lock, inexpensive example, good restoration candidate.
Barrel length 40 inches.
