M0914     Confederate currency, $10, authorized September 2, 1861, dated September 2, 1862 in error, M. 

Currency was issued by the Confederate government authorized September 1, 1861 but with September 1, 1862 issue date in error, "Six months after Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and the United States / The CONFEDERATE STATES of AMERICA / Will pay ONE DOLLAR to Bearer / FUNDABLE IN EIGHT PER CENT STOCK OR BONDS OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES".   In addition the engraver left off the language that appears on most notes, "RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES EXCEPT EXPORT DUTIES".  Note depicts Ceres resting on bales of cotton, at center, and R. M. T. Hunter, Confederate Secretary of State and Senator, at right, black print on plain paper, plain back.  Date is printed, serial number is hand inscribed, signature is hand signed.  Engraver did not place his name on the note, but it is believed to have been engraved by Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, Virginia.  This note has at least three errors, wrong date, statement omitted about export duties, and the engraver name was omitted!  Note is whole and complete, and relatively crisp, but with some thin spots.

Currency was authorized October 13, 1862 and issued by the Confederate government December 2, 1862, " SIX MONTHS AFTER RATIFICATION OF A TREATY OF PEACE BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE STATES AND THE UNITED STATES  / The CONFEDERATE STATES of AMERICA / Will pay TWENTY DOLLARS to the Bearer on demand  /  Receivable in Payment of all Dues except Export Duties. / Fundable in stocks or bonds of he Confederate States".  Note depicts state capitol building at Nashville, Tennessee, and A.H. Stevens, Confederate Vice President and Governor of Georgia, at right,, black print, back with blue "XX" flanked by "20", twice.  Date is printed, serial number is hand inscribed, signature is hand signed.  Printing: "Engraved by Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S. C.".  This uncirculated note was cancelled, there are two clean "X" cuts rendering the note un-useable, note probably was never issued for some reason.

Confederate States of America. LOAN OF FIFTEEN MILLIONS, UNDER ACT OF CONGRESS TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE GOVERNMENT, AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE DEFENCE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA.  On the first Day of September 1871, The Confederate States of America, will pay to the Bearer of this Bond at the Seat of Government, or such place of Deposit as may be appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, the sum of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, with interest thereon from this date payable at the same places semi annually at the rate of Eight per cent per annum, on surrender of the annexed warrants or coupons.  For the payment whereof of the Confederate States have by an Act of Congress approved the Twenty Eighth day of February, 1861 enacted that from and after the First day of August 1861, a duty of One Eighth of One cent per Pound shall be levied on all Cotton in the raw state exported from the Confederate States, and have pledged the same to be applied as a Sinking Fund to the extinguishment of the said debt.  And it is an express condition of this obligation, that at any time after the Expiration of Five Years from the First day of September 1861, the Confederate States may pay and discharge this Bond with the interest due thereon upon giving Three months previous Public notice at the Seat of Government of the time and place of payment and from and after the said time no further Interest shall be paid on this Bond, and the Coupons or Warrants for the said interest shall be void.  Bond was signed Montgomery First day of May 1861.  There are ten coupons for interest of FOUR DOLLARS each beginning March 1, 1867 and running to Sept 1, 1871.  Apparently 10 coupons for the period, March 1, 1862 to September 1, 1866 were cut for redemption.

C.S.A. of February 20 1863.  On the 1st day of July 1868, the Confederate States of America, will pay to the Bearer of this BOND at the seat of Government, or such place of deposit as may be appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, the sum of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, with interest thereon from date at the rate of EIGHT per Cent per annum Payable semiannually on surrender of the annexed Coupons.  This Contract is Authorized by an Act of Congress approved February 20, 1863, Entitled, "An Act to authorize the issue of BONDS for funding Treasury Notes", and is upon the Express condition that said Confederate States may from time to time extend the time of payment for any period, not exceeding thirty years from this date, at the same rate of interest, upon the surrender of the bond. Bond was signed Richmond 2nd day of March 1863.  There are six coupons for interest of FOUR DOLLARS each beginning January 1, 1866 and running to July 1, 1868.  Apparently five coupons for the period, July 1, 1863 to July 1, 1865 were cut for redemption.  The 12th coupon, January 1, 1863 either was removed by the Treasury at issue or not printed.
