Currency was authorized by the North Carolina state government May 11, 1861, and issued October 3, 1861, "The State of North Carolina / Will pay to Bearer / ONE DOLLAR / AT THE TREASURY / on or before Jan'y1st, 1866 / Raleigh / RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF PUBLIC DUES.".  The note depicts Minerva at left, guard dog guarding a safe in the center, black print, on plain paper, plain back, red overlay "ONE DOLLAR" on back, note is printed on the back side of North Carolina bank notes of various higher denominations, usually $5 and up or bonds, which North Carolina apparently was unable to back and so these were never issued, paper was scarce and recycled for these smaller denominations.  Date is printed, serial number is hand inscribed, signature is hand signed.  Printing: " N.
