Fakes, reproductions, replicas, Confederate plates 234 to 238 Georgia two piece buckle, oak leaf wreath, "local" castings
This series of buckles are generally cast copies of earlier buckles, castings are typically crude. Accoutrements such as this which were made in the south during the war are referred to as "locals", the originals used to copy were made generally n the north. The crude casting of this series of plates is a favorite target for fakers.
F1149 Georgia two piece
buckle
"NICE BRASS BUCKLE WITH THE GEORGIA STATE SEAL ON THE FRONT AND 1862
STAMPED INTO THE BACKSIDE.2 INCHES TALL X 3 INCHES WIDE."
Source: ebay auction by shenandoah1862 7/22/06: " GEORGIA 2 PC/ BUCKLE Item number: 290008216670"
Editor note: This seller sells on ebay auction under "Private Auction" and is frequently the subject of conversation on the NVRHA forum on fakes. The pictures shown are poor quality and not conclusive. This buckle is probably a fantasy, plain keeper and oak leaf wreath may have been made up and not copied from an original. It is highly doubtful this piece can be shown to be authentic.
[Return to relicman main page, (real stuff), enough of these fakes!]
