Virginia
button,
state seal Virtus slaying the tyrant,
officer staff,
unknown manufacture, likely southern wartime manufacture, plain wide channel,
(23mm)
Button depicts the seal of Virginia, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended
for troops of Virginia.
Origin of this unusual button leaves much to speculation.
Steele & Johnson may have made it, possibly as a
smuggled button with both the die and the style altered to differ from
any of their "standard" staff buttons. Virtus is distorted, almost a
cartoon character, back is was crudely fashioned only for this button,
button employed an earlier lower less convex style, not typical of
1860's staff buttons. Backmark: deformed blank channel, possibly Steele & Johnson smuggled button,
(BlankSouthern450). Three
part convex officer staff button,
coat size, unknown manufacture. Nondug
button.
