B6768     Virginia button, state seal Virtus slaying the tyrant, officer staff, unknown manufacture, likely southern wartime manufacture, plain wide channel, (23mm)
Button depicts the seal of Virginia, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended for troops of Virginia.  Origin of this unusual button leaves much to speculation. Steele & Johnson may have made it, possibly as a smuggled button with both the die and the style altered to differ from any of their "standard" staff buttons. Virtus is distorted, almost a cartoon character, back is was crudely fashioned only for this button, button employed an earlier lower less convex style, not typical of 1860's staff buttons.  Backmark: deformed blank channel, possibly Steele & Johnson smuggled button, (BlankSouthern450).  Three part convex officer staff button, coat size, unknown manufacture.  Nondug  button.

Button depicts the seal of Virginia, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended for troops of Virginia, southern wartime manufacture.  Backmark:  blank depressed narrow channel well formed, with star, wide flat area around shank with some variance of dimension, copper or brass wire shank, likely made by Wildt, (BlankSouthern370).   Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", copper wire shank spot brazed.  Nondug button.

Button depicts Virginia state seal, Virtus slaying the tyrant , intended for Virginia troops.  This design of the state seal with the sword and spear both pointed upward was prevalent in designs before the warBackmark:  "WM. H. SMITH & CO / (star) NEW - YORK (star)" rmdc on a stippled field, area around the shank is raised, Scovill manufacture 1840 - 1858, (SmithWH04).  Two part low convex button, coat size, silvered.  Nondug button, silvered.

Button depicts Virginia state seal, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended for Virginia troops.  This design of the state seal with the sword and spear both pointed upward was prevalent in designs before the war.  Backmark: "SUPERIOR / (star) QUALITY (star) " rm between two rings of dots, English made 1830's, (Superior12).  One part low convex button, coat size.
