This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Button depicts eagle over horses and Pennsylvania state seal symbolism, and  "Police", this is presumably a police organization for Philadelphia, backmarks are pre Civil War.  Backmark: "EXTRA / (star) QUALITY (star)" dm inner solid ring, letters are not evenly spaced, used for small button only, Scovill manufacture ca 1860, (ExtraQ04Small).  Three part officer staff button, low convex, hat or sleeve size.

Button depicts an officer style eagle with STATE FENCIBLES" AND "1813".  The Pennsylvania State Fencibles was organized before the war and re-organized after the war.  This button was probably produced around 1880.  Backmark: "HORSTMANN BROS. & CO / (dot) PHIL (dot) " dm large letters with no serifs between two rings of dots, manufactured after after 1880, (HorstmannB06)Three part officer coat button, post war rim is wide, back is silvered.

Pennsylvania regiment, Chasseur button, for Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, or New York troops:


French Chasseur button, for Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, or New York troops, white metal high convex one piece, Paris, (16.7mm)
Button depicts eagle facing right, surrounded by 13 stars.  Buttons were French manufacture and eagle is similar to French design of the eagle adapted for American use.  The French produced uniforms of the "Chasseur" style, these were presented to McClellan who issued them to regiments from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York.  These uniforms were issued with these white metal one piece buttons, along with large shako hat pins and riflemen buckles.  However the French tailored uniforms proved to be poor fitted for American troops and many were discarded.  Backmark:  "PARIS" below a wreath, white metal one part button, concave back, French supplied by Henry et Antione Cordier ca 1862, (Cordier03Small).  One part convex white metal button, hat or sleeve size.
