This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.



Florida button, state territorial seal eagle over cactus, Scovill Superfine, rmdc, (20mm)
Button depicts eagle with arrows ,olive branch, and 13 stars, over tropical cactus of a type found in Florida, intended for militia units 1840's and 1850's. 
Backmark:  "SCOVILL. MG. CO. / SUPERFINE." rmdc., ca 1850's, (ScovillM140).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Florida button, state seal "Cherokee rose", officer staff, E Halfmann, (22.3mm)
Button depicts six pointed star, surrounded by wreath, with "Florida".  
The governor of Florida was directed to find a seal for the state of Florida, this six pointed star is referred to by collectors as the "Cherokee rose" but that is not a contemporary description. Button is quite rare, produced by Scovill around 1860, E Halfmann of Montgomery Alabama was the contractor. Militia in Florida was oriented around the panhandle region before the Civil War which was an extension of the Gulf Coast economic power of Mobile and New Orleans.   Backmark:  "E. HALFMANN / (star) MONTGOMERY ALA.(star) " dm between rings of dots, Scovill produced ca 1860, (HalfmannE01).  Three part officer staff button, coat size.

Button depicts six pointed star, surrounded by wreath, with "Florida".  
The governor of Florida was directed to find a seal for the state of Florida, this six pointed star is referred to by collectors as the "Cherokee rose" but that is not a contemporary description. Button is quite rare, produced by Scovill around 1860, E Halfmann of Montgomery Alabama was the contractor. Militia in Florida was oriented around the panhandle region before the Civil War which was an extension of the Gulf Coast economic power of Mobile and New Orleans.   Backmark:  "EXTRA / (star) QUALITY (star)" dm small letters between two rings of dots, a faint inner ring sometimes appears which may have been formed when the shank was installed producing a slight depression around the shank, Scovill produced ca 1860, (ExtraQ01).  Three part officer staff button, coat size.
