Research Center: Artillery5711-Skates
Rifled artillery projectile, Skates design, Confederate manufacture, bursting shell, pattern with smooth sides, lead ring sabot, fuze unknown. Confederate rifled 32 pounder 6.4in.
Projectile was produced early, and production by a small foundry in Mobile Alabama was very limited and manufactured only in rifled 32 pounder size. Shell is fitted with a lead sabot with 5 pre-rifled flanges. There also are air holes on the bottom. The only five land and groove 6.4 in. guns were at Mobile. The sabot failed tests early on and was cancelled, only a few of these unfired shells have survived. None have survived with fuzes, so fuze type is not known. Shell measures: diameter 6.36in., length 10.5in. (excluding fuze), weight 56lbs.
