A2167
Schenkl shell, "common" (standard), Schenkl
percussion fuse, paper sleeve sabot, Ordnance rifle, 3 in.
Schenkl employed a rounded base with seven ribs, on which a paper sleeve sabot
was fitted, the paper would expand on firing and flutter away harmlessly, an
innovative way to deal with unstable sabots. Nose on this pattern is
pointed, it is a "common" or standard round and will not be filled with balls.
Shell is usually equipped with a percussion fuse, intended to go against
opposing cannon by striking the equipment. Schenkl Percussion fuse is
marked "JP SCHENKL / PAT OCT 16 1861", (Jones pg. 98). Metal
quality is solid, light to moderate pitting, dated fuse is intact, ding is from
impact. Recovered: Virginia campaign, not known. Shell measures:
diameter 2.9in., length 9.0in.(excluding fuse), weight 8lbs.

Edition), pg. 300 $325.
