South Carolina buttons of the Civil War

All items listed are guaranteed authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.

B5432     South Carolina state seal button (21.7mm)
 
Button depicts the seal of South Carolina, a palmetto tree over an oak log, symbolic of the Revolutionary War victory at Sullivans Island.  
Backmark: "YOUNG. SMITH & CO / * * * NEW. YORK * * * " dm two inner solid rings, third inner ring is set of triangles resembling a gear, Scovill produced ca 1830's or 1840's (Young08)  
Two part convex coat button, slight convex back, well made button is silvered.
Stand up shank intact, silvered nondug button.

B5142     Citadel Cadet, South Carolina (18.2mm)

Backmark: "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / NY" dm between two rings.
These buttons do show up on an identified cadet uniform on display at the Citadel museum in Charleston, SC. Buttons are identified as
SC militia by both Albert and Tice, but this is cadet size, not militia size button and examples have been found on the old Citadel campus downtown Charleston.
Shank intact, fully gilded nondug button.

B3010     Kings Mountain Military School button (20mm)
 
Kings Mountain Military was formed 1855, Yorkville SC (modern day York SC) this two part "cadet" size button was supplied at that time.
Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G. CO. / WATERBURY."  rmdc on a stippled field, ca 1850's (ScovillM72)  
Two part cadet size coat button, manufactured 1850's
