Catalog of button backmarks
Van Wart Son & Company

Van Wart Son & Co was an English manufacturer operating from the 1820's.  There is debate, however as to whether they actually made these buttons, or if either Smith Kemp Wright or C Rowley could have made them.  In any case these buttons were made very late in the war, and either did not make the last blockade run, or came in too late to be issued, in either case there are no credible recoveries from southern battlefields or camps.  They were clearly made for the Confederacy, however.   

Most information on this page is from Tice's book, Dating Buttons..., the pictures are generally from buttons that I have handled.

Backmark:  "VAN WART (dot) SON & Co.. * " dm two rings of dots, actual English maker not known, likely Smith Kemp Wright, buttons made too late to be issued.
