Scovill companies before 1840
Two brothers J. M. Lamson Scovill and William Henry Scovill operated the business as a partnership from 1827 to 1840. Buttons of this period are generally marked some variation of "JML Scovill..." or "Scovills".
Most information on this page is from Tice's book, Dating Buttons..., the pictures are generally from buttons that I have handled.
Scovill01 (21.2mm)
Backmark: "J. M. L. & W. H. SCOVILL / (dot) WATERBURY (dot)
/ EXTRA SUPERFINE (dot) * (dot) * (dot) * (dot)" dm between solid ring, no
outer ring, flat back, Scovill manufacture 1830's.

Examples with this backmark:
Note that the dot appearing before and after "WATERBURY" is
absent on this example. Several of the letters are only partially formed,
this is caused by a weak stamping or debris may have clogged part of the die.

two raised solid rings, outer rounded border, ca 1827 to 1840 by Scovill.

This is 19mm size, the rays are shorter than the 22mm size, backmark is otherwise similar.
