Catalog of button backmarks
Horstmann Brothers

Horstmann Brothers operated 1859 to 1893.  They had operations in both New York and Philadelphia.  Many of these backmarks will date after the Civil War, and are so noted.  

Most information on this page is from Tice's book, Dating Buttons..., the pictures are generally from buttons that I have handled.  


HorstmannB03  (23mm) 

Backmark:  "HORSTMANN BROTHERS & CO / (dot) PHIL (dot) " dm between two rings of dots. Ca 1860, probably manufactured by Steele & Johnson for Horstmann.  
Tice page 131, item count # 3, [B18-3] with modification.

Backmark: "HORSTMANN BROS. & CO / (dot) PHIL (dot) " dm large letters with no serifs between two rings of dots, manufactured after after 1880. 
Note, there is a period after BROS, it is small and may be hard to see on some examples including this one.
