Catalog of button backmarks
Blank backs, English producers

The English producers may have used blank backs either as generic stock or trade items, or they could have done it to disguise the origins.  As the war dragged on and the southern cause seemed to be lost, English support waned, and although England was "neutral" the English producers may have felt a need for less visibility. 

Most information on this page is from Tice's book, Dating Buttons..., the pictures are generally from buttons that I have handled.

Backmark: blank with no contours, this is English manufacture, blank to disguise the origin, probably Smith Kemp Wright.

Backmark: blank, recessed well, has P Tait type floating shank, unmarked back was probably intended to disguise its origin.
