A2175
Harding hollow shot bolt, copper ring sabot
Confederate rifled 32 pounder, 6.4 in.
Bolt has a hollow core, in order to achieve greater velocity in short
range engagements, flat nose, relatively copper ring sabot, which usually
failed on firing. The inner core, usually left empty, is plugged with a
threaded plug on the bottom.
Fired sabot intact shows 13 lands and grooves, rare to get this shell with
sabot, there are a few base chips showing stress of the sabot but it did not
fail on this example, shell was found in the brackish marshes around Charleston,
metal surface is fully restored and soft but stable and sealed.
Recovered Charleston SC, attack of USS Dia Ching (only site recovered).
