P1611     Militia rectangle panel plate, patriotic design

This stock militia "panel" plate was available for for purchase by the militia units, in the 1840's or 1850s'.  It employed a general patriotic design, an eagle facing right, 12 stars, the die maker apparently could not fit the 13th star artistically so left it out.  Most lost in the field were used by southerners, although they were originally supplied to units in both the north and the south.
Constructed of rectangle rolled brass, die struck, relatively sturdy plate, tongue and keeper bar were brazed.
Attractive dug plate, minor bends, hooks are missing, plate shows significant wear which means it was frequently polished by the original wearer.
Recovered: by Marque Blubaugh, at a house site near Mount Jackson VA
Plate measures 55.3mm x 82.8mm
Ref:  O'Donnell & Campbell,  plate 405

Item is on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester, VA.
