California, two part belt buckle

Gilt cast brass, buckle was likely made by William Taussig
& Co New York for the militia to defend the gold region. The big fancy gaudy
style of this buckle is so reflective of the gold rush period, California seal
depicts Minerva with a bear, a miner in the background, along with 31 stars,
California was the 31st state.
Nondug example, heavily gilded.
