Buckles issued by Maryland

This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years.  This archive record is for educational purposes only.  Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.

Maryland state seal, stamped brass, solder filled.
Beautiful dug plate, 1970's hooks missing, no bends.
Recovered: Fredericksburg VA
Plate measures 55mm X 87mm

Although Maryland never seceded, most Maryland state seal insignia items are considered to have been used by Confederate troops, as the rebels were generally known to have retained the identify of their state, while the unionists generally traded in their gear for the new Federal issue. Construction is solid brass casting, tongue with wide base is brazed, although believed to have been made by Gaylord, the tongue is wider base and longer than the other Gaylord tongues and generally Maryland plates are not bench numbered. 
Clean patina, hook intact, plate slightly flattened
Recovered: not known, from Topper collection
Plate measures 51.4mm (46.0 inside) X 89mm (flat)

Although Maryland never seceded, most Maryland state seal insignia items are considered to have been used by CSA troops, as the rebels were generally known to have retained the identify of their state, while the unionists generally traded in their gear for the new Federal issue. Construction is solid brass casting, tongue is brazed Beautiful example of this plate with original belt adjuster 
Recovered from Old Saluda Mill, Columbia SC early pickup shortly after the war. This buckle shows wear from honest use, having served the entire war until Sherman's march.
Plate measures 51.5mm x 87mm, with original curve
