Maryland state seal, stamped brass, solder filled.
Beautiful dug plate, 1970's hooks missing, no bends.

Although Maryland never seceded, most Maryland state seal insignia items are
considered to have been used by Confederate troops, as the rebels were generally
known to have retained the identify of their state, while the unionists
generally traded in their gear for the new Federal issue. Construction is solid
brass casting, tongue with wide base is brazed, although believed to have been
made by Gaylord, the tongue is wider base and longer than the other Gaylord
tongues and generally Maryland plates are not bench numbered.

Recovered from Old Saluda Mill, Columbia SC early pickup shortly after the war.
This buckle shows wear from honest use, having served the entire war until
Sherman's march.
