Confederate government frame buckles

This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years.  This archive record is for educational purposes only.  Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.

P1619     Confederate frame buckle, "beveled edge" style

The Confederacy was able to efficiently produce these buckles, design was simple but effective, one piece no moving parts.  
Construction is solid brass casting, referred to as "beveled edge" style referring to the beveled edge around the outer edge of the buckle.
Clean example, no bends or breaks  
Recovered: Spotsylvania VA by John Graham.  
Plate measures 56.7mm x 69.1mm

P0383     Confederate frame buckle, "heavy thick" style

Construction is heavy solid brass sand casting. This extra sturdy plate was only issued to troops in the Western campaign.
Outstanding example, no bends.
Recovered: Rocky Face Ridge, Atlanta 1864 campaign
Plate measures 60.5mm X 75.1mm

P0359      Confederate frame buckle, "Gutter back" style

Construction is solid brass casting, referred to as "gutter" style referring to the depressed channel around the edge.
Clean example, no bends or breaks
Found by Harry Ridgeway, Stuart Bell farm First Battle of Winchester
Plate measures 60.4 to 60.8mm (not square) X 67.4mm

P1618     Confederate frame buckle, "gutter back" style
    
The Confederacy was able to quickly produce these buckles early in the war, design was simple but effective, one piece no moving parts.  
Construction is solid brass casting, referred to as "gutter" style referring to the depressed channel around the edge.  
Clean example, no bends or breaks  
Recovered: northern Mississippi  
Plate measures 59.4mm to 60.0mm X 66.5mm (not square)

P0360     Confederate frame buckle, "standard" style

Not much is "standard" about these, the term means that this was the approved pattern from which many of the other patterns evolved. Construction is solid brass casting with raised hooks.
Some bends and breaks, all pieces original
Found by Harry Ridgeway, Second Battle of Winchester along the stone wall on the Ridgeway property that is depicted in the 1856 painting, The View of Winchester
Plate measures 62mm X 70mm (approximate with bends)

The Confederacy was able to quickly produce these buckles early in the war, design was simple but effective, one piece no moving parts.  Not much is "standard" about these, the term means that this was the approved pattern from which many of the other patterns evolved.  Construction is solid brass casting.  
Clean example, no bends or breaks  
Recovered: central Virginia  
Plate measures 63.6mm x 72.5mm

Construction is solid brass casting with forked tongue
Attractive example, could be further cleaned.

Plate measures 58mm X 71mm

P0361    Confederate frame buckle, medium "forked tongue" style

Construction is solid brass casting with forked tongue
Outstanding example, free of bends.

Plate measures 57.2 to 57.7mm (not square) mm X 89.5 to 90.0mm
