plates
This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years. This archive record is for educational purposes only. Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author. None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.

CS two part buckle,
"Richmond" style
Two part Virginia style is noted for the tall straight
serifs and
beveled connecting bars. Tongue is stepped up style. The
manufacturer that made the script CS two part buckle also made
this plate.
All three of these pieces were found together, an
unblemished belt that was simply laid down and forgotten.

CS two part buckle, Virginia
style
Two part Virginia style is noted for the step up back and
straight
serif, hanger loop was found with it.
Beautiful dug example, both halves dug together, unmucked with patina.
Recovered: Shenandoah Valley, Va, from Howard Crouch collection.

CS two part belt plate, Virginia style
Solid cast, exaggerated serif is typical of the Virginia
style plates, stepped up tongue, laurel leaf wreath.
Clean 1960's patina both halves dug together, once one half was found, a
sizeable pile of firewood had to be moved to expose the
other half!

CS two part belt plate, Virginia
style with pointed serif
Solid cast, Virginia style plate is noted for its pointed serif,
stepped up tongue, laurel leaf wreath.
Attractive dug patina both halves dug together.
Recovered: Brandy Station, Va

CS two part buckle, Virginia
style
Two part Virginia style is noted for the straight back
and fat rounded letters with straight serif and major size difference between
the tongue and wreath keepers. The Confederate craftsman made no effort to match
the sizes of the keepers. Roman numeral "III" scratched in the back of
the wreath is probably a pattern number as it appears in all examples.
Beautiful dug example, both halves dug together.

CS two part buckle "balls serifs" style
Plate is noted for pronounced serifs. Each part is solid
brass casting, wreath is solid back and not hollowed out. In addition the wreath
is badly off center with respect to the keepers, a detail in the crude mold
which was never corrected!
