This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years.  This archive record is for educational purposes only.  Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.


B4383     New York early one piece button, nondug (22mm)

Backmark: "Treble Plated / London" dm
Stand up shank intact, attractive silvered nondug button

B4803      New York Artillery, National Guard button (20mm)

Button bears inscription "NYSA National Guard" (New York State Artillery). This was a state militia unit formed around 1860, eventually became a model for the later state controlled "National Guard" units.
Backmark: "HORSTMANN (dot) BRO & (dot) ALLIEN / (dot) Y (sic) (dot) " rmdc, probably Scovill ca 1850's (HorstmannA18)
Two part coat button.

Depicts state seal of New York, intended for New York militia units. Unlike most northern states these buttons were issued well into 1864 and apparently was used by both officers and enlisted. 
Backmark: "EXTRA / * QUALITY * " dm small letters between rings of dots, no well for shank, Scovill produced ca 1860. (ExtraQ02) 
Three part officer or "staff" coat button. 
Stand up shank intact, top grade gilded nondug button.

Unit mustered in 1861, in 1862 joined with the 124th regiment, dubbed the "Orange Blossoms".

B3969     Poughkeepsie Military Institute , "PMI", Poughkeepsie NY, officer staff button (22mm)
 
Backmark:  "Schuyler H& G New York"  dm ring of dots
School was formed in 1857 and was well known in the north at the time.

B3971     Hudson River Institute "HRI" Claverack NY  officer staff button (22mm)

Backmark:  "SCOVILL MF'G CO. / WATERBURY." dm
School was formed in 1855, and operated after the war, button is prewar.
