This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years.  This archive record is for educational purposes only.  Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.


B4943     Kentucky state seal staff button (22.8mm)

Depicts the state seal of Kentucky, intended for officers of Kentucky militia units. 
Backmark: "SUPERFIN / (diamond) PARIS (diamond) " dm between rings. This was believed to be a disguised backmark to conceal sales by the northern manufacturers to the south during the conflict. (Superfin01) 
Three part officer or "staff" coat button. 
Stand up shank and backmark intact, top grade nondug button.

Depicts the state seal of Kentucky, intended for officers of Kentucky militia units. 
Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY. " dm between one outer ring and two inner rings of dots, ca 1860. (ScovillM17) Scovill produced this around 1860. This backmark and its use on Kentucky buttons is explained in the NST Vol XXV No 5. page 34 Figure 2. 
Three part officer or "staff" coat button. 
Stand up shank and backmark intact, top grade nondug button.

B4331     Kentucky state seal staff button (23mm)

Backmark: "Waterbury Button Co / Waterbury Con" dm Button was made after the Civil War when the southern militias
were reconstituted.
