This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years. This archive record is for educational purposes only. Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author. None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.
All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described. Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission. This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Georgia state seal button, (23.1mm)

Depicts the state seal of Georgia, intended for Georgia militia units. Schuyler
offered these buttons for sale in their catalog.
Backmark: "SCHUYLER. H & G. / (dot) NEW -YORK. (dot)" rmdc on a
stippled background, Scovill produced ca 1850's. (Schuyler04)

Georgia state seal button (23.4mm)
Motif depicts the seal of Georgia, three pillars representing the branches
of government, supporting "Constitution" in the form of a dome.
Backmark: "W. G. MINTZER / * PHILA 1861 (dot)" rmdc on stippled field, back is
often silvered, likely "back dated" to cover smuggling operation, actual
producer is probably Steel & Johnson (Mintzer05)

Backmark: "W G Mintzer / Phila 1861" early rmdc on stippled field,
desirable dated backmark was a disguise, this northern producer was
believed to be smuggling these buttons with this prewar date!

button, "local" button (23.3mm)
This crude design employed a much simplified version of the Georgia
seal and by so doing achieved remarkable clarity. Manufacture by a small
Confederate "local" shop during the war.
Backmark: blank channel with ring of dots, brass back, maker not known,
(BlankLocal04)
Two part button, crude face and back are both brass.
Shank intact but loose, slight push, typical of most of these locals.

Georgia state seal staff nondug (23mm)

Backmark: "Scovill Mf'g Co / Waterbury" dm, post war backmark.
Button is silvered. These were made for officers of the Georgia militia when
reconstituted after reconstruction.

Irish Jasper Greens, "IJG" button Savannah GA (22.3mm)

Backmark: "Benedict & Burnham" dm in a ribbon An elite Georgia
unit, the Irish Jasper Greens formed Company A 1st Georgia Volunteers. This was
a unit with a lot of history and The name is taken from a Revolutionary War
hero. The members had to be of Irish decent and citizens of Savannah. These
buttons were produced during the 1840's. This unit served the Civil War mostly
as a home guard in the defense of Savannah.
Stand up shank intact, gilded attractive button.

Franklin College,
Georgia (22.7mm)
Backmark: "Scovills & Co / Waterbury" rmdc, very rare
for a cadet
button to be this large. One of the oldest cadet programs, the cadets
trained in 1812. Button is rare, and all examples date to the 1840's.
Shank intact, small push, button detail is sharp.
Recovered: Mobile Alabama trashpit!
