Artillery shells, Selma (Confederate)
This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years. This archive record is for educational purposes only. Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author. All artillery items listed have been disarmed and rendered inert.
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.

Selma
pointed nose bolt, copper disc sabot, Confederate rifle 3.3 in.
Bourrelet rings, copper cloverleaf sabot, "G" stamped on
sabot. Rope was placed in grove above sabot, presumably to effect sealing on
firing. Unfired example, sabot intact, "G" is not visible, metal good light pitting.
Recovered: Oconee River cache, Milledgeville, Ga
Diameter 3.25 inch, length 6.9 inch

Selma bourreleted shell, Selma disc sabot, wood fuse, Confederate
rifle, 3.3 in.
Copper disc sabot was cast onto the shell, affixed to the shell
with a cloverleaf shaped post. On firing, often the post would hold securely
while pieces of the sabot would be ripped off around the post. Sabot is usually
marked "G" which was inspector stamp used at Selma Arsenal. Cast for a
wooden fuse.
Fired sabot intact, sabot is bent but not ripped, "G" is
visible, wood fuse missing, excellent metal.
Recovered: not known

pounder, 5.82 in.
Copper disc sabot was cast onto the shell, affixed to the
shell with a cloverleaf shaped post. On firing, often the post would hold
securely while pieces of the sabot would be ripped off around the post. Sabot is
usually marked "G" which was inspector stamp used at Selma Arsenal.
Fired sabot is partial, was ripped from firing, "G" is visible on
section remaining, excellent example of fired sabot for this rare shell, metal
strong.
Recovered: Port Hudson Diameter 5.7 in., length 8.8 in.
