A1851         Marshall Arsenal smooth sided shell, 4 stud Mullane sabot, wood fuse, Confederate rifle, 3 in.
A1851.jpg (14894 bytes) A1851B.jpg (11547 bytes) A1851C.jpg (13566 bytes) A1851D.jpg (21821 bytes) A1851C.jpg (13566 bytes)
This is Mullane pattern made at Marshall Arsenal, four brass studs were cast into the sabot, copper sabot affixed with a center bolt. This is a rare pattern, example of pattern in a different caliber is shown D&G pg. 213. Cast for a wood fuse.
Fired example, sabot separated leaving the studs sheared in the body of the shell, wood fuse is missing, solid metal light pitting.
Recovered: not known
Diameter 2.85 in., length 7.0 in exclude bolt & studs
Ref: D & G not listed (see pg. 213 for pattern in different caliber)

A1607     Schenkl pointed nose bolt, Marshall Arsenal, probably 3.8 inch rifle

This Confederate copy of the Schenkl design was believed to have been made at Marshall Arsenal in Texas, the tapered base has 12 ribs, numerous casting flaws, and used a wooden sleeve. It is not entirely clear what gun this was intended for, measurements of these crude shells vary, James 3.8 inch is most likely.
Metal quality is good, rough complexion is from poor quality metal used.
Recovered: Provencal. La (all known examples came from this cache)
Diameter 3.7 inch, length 8.5 inch
Ref: D & G pg. 311

A1272     Schenkl Marshall Arsenal shell, CSA 3.8 in. rifle

Marshall Arsenal, Texas produced this rounded nose shell.  Ledge around the base held the wood sabot in place, (missing on this example).  There is question as to which gun this was intended for.  It was thought to have been intended for a 3.67 gun, but diameter of this is slightly more than that which means it was either really sloppy machining and shell was discarded or it was intended for a captured 3.8 James rifle which the south did not produce.
Wooden fuse plug is missing, 12 raised ribs.
Recovered:  Provancal, LA
Diameter 3.68 in., length 8.3 in.
Ref:  Dickey & George  pg. 313
